About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the most well known therapy of Oriental Medicine. It is a vital component of the health care systems of Japan, China, Vietnam, Korea and other countries in the Orient and can be traced back over 5000 years. The theory of Oriental Medicine holds that the energy that animates the body, mind, and spirit of a human being is called Qi ('chee'), and when the Qi is in balance and flowing freely, there is health. Acupuncture and other forms of stimulus therapy, as well as herbal prescriptions, and attention to diet and lifestyle, are the tools used by Oriental Medicine to restore health when there is imbalance, blockage, and disease. Western medical science has yet to define the nature of Qi energy, but it now acknowledges the large body of empirical evidence that the therapies of Oriental Medicine are safe and effective.

Damon P. Miller II, M.D., N.D. has been a physician in California for the last 13 years. With experience in internal medicine and emergency medicine, and after years as a radiologist with board certification in Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology specializing in minimally invasive surgery, he took the opportunity to study acupuncture and herbal medicine at Meiji College in San Francisco. Expanding this training through the study of specialized techniques for infants and children with Julian Scott, the world renowned specialist in pediatric acupuncture, and through an on-going study of the techniques of five element Traditional Acupuncture with Khosrow Khalighi, L.Ac., Dr. Miller now offers Physician Acupuncture at his office in Los Altos, California.

It is remarkable to have the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and training in Western medicine with the very ancient and successful healing arts of the East. Dr. Miller's current specialty is Traditional Acupuncture for both adults and children, herbal medicine and nutrition counseling. He integrates all aspects of his work with Western Medicine, so his patients receive the best of both the East and the West.

Many of his patients consult with him as their sole physician. Others have come as a recommendation from doctors to supplement existing care that they are receiving.

His vision is to continue to build a medical practice where people are well cared for, heard and have their needs met. People feel better when they leave his office than when they came in.

This web site will serve as an introduction to his Medical Acupuncture practice and some of its special features.

Acupuncture Works!

Acupuncture has been used by millions of Americans and is recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices, and rates them in the category of "safe and effective." The National Institutes of Health finished a two and one-half year study of acupuncture, electrical acupuncture and microcurrent therapies last year, and published their Consensus Statement in November, 1977. The Consensus Statement from the NIH states that, "While it is often thought that there is substantial research evidence to support conventional medical practices; this is frequently not the case. This does not mean that these treatments are ineffective. The data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many accepted Western medical therapies. One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions."
